American Sycamore - One of Iowa’s largest tree.
Sycamore
Sycamore is native to the southeast two thirds of Iowa. It grows best in moist soils, often found along streams and bottom lands. Sycamore trees are fast growing and can grow to an enormous size. In fact, they are the largest deciduous tree in North America. The most striking feature of the tree is its mottled bark giving it a camouflage appearance with the trunk displaying patches of white, brown, tan and gray colors. Sycamore is a moderate hardwood that has distinct ray flecks that is sometimes called “Lacewood”. Sycamore wood has a fine closed even texture and interlocking grain.
