Black Walnut is the most valuable tree in Iowa.

Walnut

Black Walnut is native throughout the state of Iowa. It occurs on a variety of sites, but is most common in bottom lands, streams and moist sheltered coves and slopes. It grows best in deep, rich, well drained soil. Walnut is a strong, hard and durable wood that turns really well. It has a dense tight grain and has excellent woodworking qualities. The wood is light to dark chocolate brown color and is the only dark brown domestic wood species.

Sometimes there are large cracks or insect damage in the logs that we repair with inlay epoxy. This can add to the interest in design.
