Honey Locust

Honey Locust is native to Iowa where as Black Locust is not. Black Locust was widely planted across the state and has escaped for cultivation and is found growing with native species. The Honey Locust has a pleasing, graceful foliage. Young Locust trees has a fairly smooth bark where as the older trees bark is long, thin, flat longitudinal ridges with curled edges. The reddish wood is strong, coarse grained and moderately durable. Its common uses are fence posts, railroad ties, furniture, interior woodwork and fuel wood.
